Ceiling Roses

Plaster ceiling roses / centres were originally installed as a centre piece to elaborate ceiling designs and were also used to protect the ceiling from heat and charring caused by candle or gas lighting. As a result, the owner had only to redecorate the plaster centre piece rather than the entire ceiling.

Plaster roses emerged in the Georgian era and ran through the Regency, Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco periods. They come in various sizes and styles, from spiralling acanthus leaf designs to plain member runs. Ceiling roses were particularly popular during the Victorian period.
